Historic Flat Rock, Inc. has just announced a new program which will reward preservation efforts within the Flat Rock Historic District. Flat Rock, NC is the largest historic district in the state of North Carolina. Within the district you will see homes, businesses, barns, stone columns, commercial buildings, gardens and scenic byways following the original Flat Rock roads.

There is a heightened activity in this “not so sleepy” village in the spring and summer. You may notice business and homeowners sprucing up landscaping, restoring a porch, painting, creating a welcoming atmosphere. What Victoria Flanagan, president of HFR, Inc. calls “the best of what preservation is all about. This is private investment that reflects the fact that preservation is supported throughout Flat Rock”.

HFR, Inc. in their efforts to increase educational awareness as to what they do and who they are, is instituting the first “President’s Award” to a homeowner or business who exemplifies the meaning of preserving and protecting the historical nature of Flat Rock. The honoree will be announced at the August HFR, Inc. membership meeting. This year’s award will be in honor of Alexander and Laurinda Schenck – the first president of HFR, Inc. his wife and their family.

Please send in a picture of what you see that exemplifies restoration efforts.  Photographs will be accepted April- July 2019. To submit a photograph to HFR, Inc. you must be the photographer or have permission to submit the photo to be published. Please submit high-resolution photos that include your contact information, property address, the name of the property owner (if known – if not we will contact them ), and the name of the photographer.
