Afternoon Book Club Meeting
October 18, 2017

The ABC meeting at the Historic Flat Rock Cultural Center/ Museum was great fun. We will be meeting May to October in 2018.
Our October selection was ‘Flat Rock of the Old Time’—Letters from the Mountains to the Lowcountry, 1837-1939. Edited by Robert B. Cuthbert.
It was mentioned that this discussion needs to be continued —and I believe that we will revisit this book in 2018–with more specific questions ahead of time to deepen our conversation.
We discussed a few titles to pursue in 2018-they were:
=>Madness Madness Rules the Hour- Charleston, 1860 and the Mania For War- Paul Starobin.
=>Slavery in North Carolina 1748-1775. Marvin L. Michael Kay and Lorin Lee Cary.
=>Upheaval in Charleston-Earthquake and Murder on the Eve of Jim Crow. Susan Miller Williams and Stephen G. Hoffius
=>Northern Money, Southern Land. Edited by Robert B. Cuthbert and Stephen G. Hoffius.
=>Grant-Ron Chernow’s new release
Let’s be thinking of other titles as well- let me know your personal preferences—and if you would be interested in leading a discussion on a specific topic-perhaps you would like to add Louise Bailey for the May discussion—looking at her complete works?
For a spring offering we may have a food related topic—and offer a May Saturday tasting event. Open to the public.
As soon as I receive responses on titles, I will sent out a reading list.
Thanks to all who attended !
